The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) is an introductory, nationally recognized teaching qualification in the UK. It is often referred to as the "threshold license to teach" because it is the minimum requirement for anyone wanting to teach or train adults in the further education and skills sector.

If you have heard people mention PTLLS (pronounced "petals"), this is the same thing; the AET replaced PTLLS in 2014, though many people still use the old name.

Key Features of the AET

The course is designed for those who are new to teaching or want to formalize their existing skills. It focuses on the "lifelong learning" sector, which includes learners aged 14 and above.

  • **No Experience Required: You do not need to be in a teaching role to take the course.

  • Duration: It is a short course, typically taking between 5 days (intensive) to 12 weeks (part-time/online).
  • Levels: It is equivalent to an A-Level or NVQ Level 3.

What You Will Study

The qualification is usually broken down into three core units:

  1. Roles and Responsibilities: Understanding the boundaries of being a teacher and how to maintain a safe, professional learning environment.

  1. Inclusive Teaching: Learning how to plan and deliver lessons that engage all types of learners. This usually culminates in a "Micro-teach"—a 15-minute practice session where you teach a topic to your peers.

  1. Assessment: Understanding how to check that your students are actually learning through various testing and feedback methods.

What Can You Do With It?

Once you have this award, you are qualified to work in several settings:

  • FE Colleges: Working as a tutor or lecturer.

  • Private Training: Teaching vocational skills like first aid, beauty, or health and safety.

  • Corporate Training: Leading workshops within a company.

  • Community Education: Teaching evening classes or adult skills.
